Learning Objectives
* Define coding and identify simple examples of code.
* Explain why coding is important and identify basic coding concepts.
*Create a simple sequence of instructions or a basic coding project.
What Is Coding?
Coding is the process of writing instructions that tell a computer or digital device what to do.
A person who writes code is called a programmer or coder.
Child-friendly explanation: Coding is like talking to a computer using instructions that it can understand.
Example:
START
Move forward
Turn right
Move forward
STOP
3. What Is a Computer Program?
A computer program is a set of instructions written to make a computer perform a particular task.
Examples:
Games
Calculator apps
Educational apps
Websites
Animation programmes
Mobile applications
Robots
Banking applications
4. What Is an Algorithm?
An algorithm is a step-by-step set of instructions for solving a problem or completing a task.
Example: Making a Sandwich
Get two slices of bread.
Add your filling.
Put the slices together.
Cut the sandwich.
Serve.
5. Why Is Coding Important?
Problem-solving skills: Children learn how to break difficult problems into smaller steps.
Creativity: They can create games, animations, stories and applications.
Logical thinking: Coding teaches children to think carefully and follow patterns.
Technology skills: Children learn how digital technologies work.
Collaboration: Children can work together to create projects.
Future opportunities: Coding is used in software development, artificial intelligence, robotics, website development, game development, engineering and data science.
6. Basic Coding Concepts
Sequence: Carrying out instructions in the correct order.
Example: Move forward → Turn left → Jump → Stop.
Command: An instruction given to a computer.
Example: Move, Jump, Turn, Play sound, Say “Hello”.
Loop: A command that tells a computer to repeat an instruction.
Example: REPEAT 5 TIMES: Clap.
Condition: Allows a computer to make a decision.
Example: IF it is raining, take an umbrella; ELSE go outside.
Variable: A named place used to store information.
Example: score = 10. A variable is like a labelled box where a computer keeps information.
7. Examples of Coding Languages
Scratch – excellent for beginners and visual programming.
Python – widely used for programming and AI.
JavaScript – commonly used to make websites interactive.
HTML/CSS – used to structure and style web pages.
Blockly – uses visual blocks to introduce programming concepts.
Beginner example: In Scratch, a child can use blocks to make a character move, turn and say “Hello!”
Classroom Activity: Create a Robot
Design a robot on paper and give your robot five commands.
Example: Robot Name – Robo-Blozzom
Move forward.
Turn left.
Pick up the ball.
Move backwards.
Say “Mission complete!”
Ask learners to act out their robot’s instructions.
9. Mini Coding Challenge
Challenge: Help the Robot Reach the Star.
Give lefind a safe sequence of instructions to reach the star without touching the black squares.
