Acts 5 Antony and Cleopatra By Williams Shakespeare

ANTONY AND CLEOPATRA BY WILLIAMS SHAKESPEARE

ACT 5 – CRITICAL ANALYSIS

Act 5 presents the tragic conclusion of the play. After Antony’s defeat, Mark Antony is misled into believing that Cleopatra is dead. Overcome with grief and shame, he attempts suicide.

Antony stabs himself but does not die immediately. He is taken to Cleopatra’s monument, where she has hidden herself. In a deeply emotional scene, Antony dies in Cleopatra’s arms.

Later, Octavius Caesar plans to take Cleopatra to Rome as a symbol of his victory. Refusing humiliation, Cleopatra chooses death. She applies poison (traditionally an asp snake) and dies peacefully. Her attendants, Iras and Charmian, also die beside her.

Description of Their Death:

Antony’s Death:

Driven by false news and honour.

A painful, imperfect suicide (botched attempt).

Dies in Cleopatra’s arms → emotional and heroic.

Cleopatra’s Death:

Carefully planned and controlled.

Uses an asp (symbol of royalty and Egypt).

Dies with dignity, grace, and power.

Key Contrast:

Antony dies in chaos and despair, while Cleopatra dies in control and majesty.

Themes in Act 5

Theme of Tragedy

Act 5 fully develops the theme of tragedy, aligning with classical tragic elements:

1. Tragic Flaw (Hamartia)

Antony’s flaw: impulsiveness and divided loyalty between love and duty.

Cleopatra’s flaw: pride and desire for grandeur.

2. Fate vs Choice

Their downfall is partly fate, but largely their own decisions:

Antony’s rash suicide.

Cleopatra’s refusal to submit to Caesar.

3. Love as Destructive

Their intense love leads to:

Political downfall

Personal ruin

Death

Love is shown as both beautiful and destructive.

4. Honour and Pride

Antony seeks honour in death.

Cleopatra refuses to be displayed as a trophy in Rome.

5. Catharsis (Audience Emotion)

The audience feels:

Pity (for their suffering)

Fear (of human weakness and fate)

This emotional release is a key feature of Shakespearean tragedy.

 Dramatic Impact on History

1. Blending History with Drama

The play is based on real historical figures:

Mark Antony

Cleopatra VII

Augustus Caesar

However, Shakespeare dramatizes events to:

Emphasise emotion over accuracy

Highlight personal relationships

2. Creation of Legendary Figures

Cleopatra becomes a symbol of powerful femininity and allure

Antony becomes a tragic hero destroyed by love

👉 Their story becomes more mythical than historical

3. Political Message

The rise of Caesar represents:

Order over chaos

Rome over Egypt

Duty over passion

4. Lasting Dramatic Impact

The deaths are visually and emotionally powerful

Cleopatra’s suicide:

Seen as one of the most iconic deaths in literature

Influences theatre, film, and literature worldwide.
